Pool lighting sample
When installing a swimming pool in a garden, the lighting is often in the background of the project.

But reasons such as safety or the decisive participation in the night decoration of the garden make us to rethink the value of the lighting of our future swimming pool. Not considering the effect of correct light can constitute a mistake that unfortunately has no easy solution once the work of our brand new swimming pool is finished. Or maybe it has?

Discover in this article the best tips in pool lighting for your next project to be a success.
One of the best ways to integrate the pool into our garden is through beautiful lighting. The light will highlight and dazzle the pool area. Surrounded by our beautiful garden, when night has already fallen, and there is no natural light to appreciate the exterior aesthetics of our house and garden the illuminated pool becomes the centre of all gaze.

Safety at all times.

As we have commented, the lighting of the swimming pools meets certain functional, practical and safety aspects.

On summer nights we like to make outdoor dinners and enjoy our garden. In this way, we can also enjoy evening parties in the pool, walk through the garden and the pool area with total safety and give ourselves refreshing baths on the hottest nights without risk of an unforeseen trip.

How to choose the right lighting.

To install the pool lights, it is not enough just to choose the type and model, and to proceed with their installation. There are some important aspects and points to pay attention to.

1. To determine the number of spotlights.

It is advisable to install a submerged projector for every 20m2 of water surface we have.

For that, we must take the measurements of the pool.

Here is an example of how we should take action.

2. To determine the depth of placement.

Specialists in the maintenance of swimming pools and installations always recommend placing them about 70 cm from the surface to have adequate lighting.

We must bear in mind, that the deeper we place them, the less illumination they will have towards the outside.

3. To determine the location of the light sources.

We must not forget the shape of the pool to place the lighting.
In some cases, we find pools with corners or projections, which can blind the spotlights that we place, such as for example, those L-shaped pools.

The solution for these cases is to place spotlights in parts as if it were two independent pools.

In the case of curved pools with organic shapes such as kidney, the angles of the curves should not exceed 10/20 degrees.

4. Aesthetic and decorative considerations.

All technical aspects are fundamental in the area of pool lighting, but what about aesthetics? If we want our swimming pool to be in tune with our garden, we must also pay attention to them

Thanks to the pool lighting we can create all kinds of really nice effects in our gardens if we know how to play with them and with their location.

For these cases, there are specific recommendations, which are worth considering.
  • Distance between the house and the pool. If it is small, we must place the pool lights in a place where they do not dazzle the house itself. Therefore, it is better to put them on the opposite side of it.
  • If we have Roman stairs inside our pool, the optimal place to put the spotlights will be on the opposite wall. In this way, we can avoid shadows, illuminating each of the steps or steps perfectly.
  • In case of considerable length pools, as competition ones, locating spotlights on sides is the best way. This way, we will be illuminating the pool in a uniform and complete form while avoiding glare.

5. Determination of the type of lighting.

We can find a variety of spotlights and pool lighting system in the market.

The first group of so-called work foci, which are those that are installed during the construction of the swimming pool. These are spotlights for embedded pools. They need their own hole in the concrete wall to place them, and they are extra-flat.
But if your pool is already built and you forgot the lighting detail, don’t worry. You’re still in time with the pool lights overlayed, which are placed with screws and studs. In this type, we find different lamp type projectors, both LED and halogen light. The most recommendable is LED bulbs, which provide the same light intensity as the others by wasting less energy. Within the LED pool spotlights, we can find many types of light. There are lamps with white light or RGB LED of variable colour, with which we can create infinite luminous effects thanks to its combination of colours.

There are also floating spotlights for swimming pools. The advantage of these is that they do not need any installation, as they float in the water.

There are many types and shapes, and they are a beautiful decorative and functional option, as they look gorgeous both during the day and at night.

We can also find magnetic spotlights, which are placed on the plate of the pool or valve.
Nowadays, there are many lighting options, which adapt to the pockets, needs and tastes of each user.

You can check the pool lighting catalogue in GESTION PISCINAS to compare the different types of pool lights and choose the most suitable for your project.

We hope that you will enjoy  your pool and garden this summer more than ever with these tips .
